In the mood for something sweet? How about creamy caramels? Monastery Candy in Dubuque handcraft caramels that are unmatched with the perfect balance of chewy and smooth textures. Don’t just take our word for it. The Washington Post said, “Rarely do we find candy of this caliber” and Reader’s Digest featured them as one of “America’s 100 Best” in 2007.
They are called Monastery Candy because they are made by a monastic community of Trappistine nuns at Our Lady of the Mississippi Abbey. The sale of caramels and other candy is the women’s main means of support.
The sisters annually produce 70 tons of caramels each year. They offer four varieties: vanilla, chocolate or vanilla caramels coated in milk or dark chocolate. They also produce Irish mints made from white chocolate and high-quality mint flavoring. All of the caramels and mints are made with fresh ingredients and no preservatives.
