Sawmill Hollow is America’s first Aronia berry farm, which begs the questions, what is an Aronia berry? Well, it’s a fruit with a rich flavor distinguished by its signature dark-purple pigment. It is said to be one of the most nutritionally dense fruits on the planet and has three times more antioxidants then a blueberry. Sawmill Hollow Family Farm reintroduced the native Aronia berry to North America nearly 20 years ago and was recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture as the first Aronia berry farm in the United States.
Sawmill Hollow is located in the Loess Hills of Western Iowa near the town of Missouri Valley. On a visit to the farm you can take in the picturesque Loess Hills, tour the grounds and scenic lake and check out their array of wines and gourmet foods. If you are planning a visit in September be sure to match up your dates with the North American Aronia Berry Festival. This area of the Loess Hills is also home to the Loess Hills Lavender Farm, the Lincoln Highway/Loess Hills Interpretive Center and the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge.
Sawmill Hollow Family Farm is a featured destination in the Iowa Lottery’s newest game with Mike Wolfe, original American Picker.
